The Best Vitamins and Food for your Teeth
As a dentist in Los Angeles treating patients of all ages, it’s my desire to help people by delivering both high-quality dental services as well as helping my patients to their teeth and gums strong.
After an examination and sharing that a patient has weak gums, tooth decay, or other issues with their teeth, I’m often asked what can be done to keep their teeth strong and healthy other than brushing their teeth twice a day and flossing after eating.
I often start by asking them what vitamins and foods they take and during the conversation explain why certain vitamins and foods can help keep teeth and gums strong and healthy.
Vitamin Supplements
Vitamin C
Vitamin C is good for both the teeth and gums as it helps keep connective tissues that hold your teeth in place healthy and strong. It’s also essential for the production of collagen, which is an important part of your gums.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D plays a significant role in oral health, including gum health. Vitamin D deficiency may lead to gingivitis, cavities, and gum disease. It may also boost gum health by reducing gum inflammation and increasing the body’s antibacterial defense system.
Vitamin A
Vitamin A is a bone booster that can help teeth strong. It’s good for your saliva production as saliva cleans bacteria from in between teeth and breaks down food. Vitamin A can be found in supplements are fruits and vegetables including carrots and sweet potatoes.
Zinc
The body needs healthy gums, and consuming zinc can help slow the risk in developing periodontal disease. Zinc can also reduce plaque and can improve gum health in children.
B Vitamins
B Vitamins, especially those with folate, can help with periodontal disease and gum health.
Foods and Drinks
Cheese, Canned Salmon & Sardines
All are beneficial foods as they are a good source of calcium, which is important in building strong teeth.
Dairy Products
Dairy products like sugar-free yogurt and milk help create more saliva, which helps produce your teeth. If you’re allergic to dairy, almond or soy milk is also good for helping your teeth
Vegetables
As with dairy products, vegetables help produce saliva to keep your enamel healthy.
Apples, Carrots & Celery
Apples help saliva production and celery and carrots often scrape bacteria and food products from your teeth.
Water
Drinking water can help keep your mouth moist and help prevent bacteria that can lead to cavities or gum disease.
Our office gives personalized care to each of our patients, with our goal to provide high-quality services with compassionate care to keep teeth healthy and strong.
It’s important to check with us or your health practitioner to ensure you’re taking the correct vitamins at the right level.
