A Guide to B Vitamins

Women with Vitamin B

There are eight essential B vitamins that assist our organs and bodily systems. B vitamins are important for making sure the body’s cells are functioning properly. They help the body convert food into energy (metabolism), create new blood cells, and maintain healthy skin cells, brain cells, and other body tissues. At times they can work in conjunction (called vitamin B complex) and can have their own unique functions.

People may develop B vitamin deficiencies if they do not get enough of the vitamins from their diet or supplements. They may also have a deficiency if their body cannot absorb nutrients properly, or if their body eliminates too much of them due to certain health conditions or medications.

The group of eight B vitamins is as follows:

  • thiamin (vitamin B-1)
  • riboflavin (vitamin B-2)
  • niacin (vitamin B-3)
  • pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5)
  • vitamin B-6
  • biotin (vitamin B-7)
  • folate (vitamin B-9)
  • vitamin B-12

Superior Source B Complex

This article will describe the B-6, B-7, B-9, and B-12 groups of vitamins:

Vitamin B-6:

B-6 helps break down carbs and fats and plays a role in more than 100 enzyme reactions. The richest sources of vitamin B-6 include tuna, chickpeas, salmon, poultry, and organ meats.

Biotin (B-7):

Biotin helps to maintain healthy blood sugar levels, promotes nail and hair strength, and supports cell growth. Many foods contain biotin, including eggs, salmon, beef sunflower seeds, and organ meats.

Folate (B-9):

The natural form of B-9 is called folate. Folic acid is a synthetic form of vitamin and can help supplement the natural B-9 nutrients found in dark green leafy vegetables, beef liver, avocado, eggs, beans, and nuts.

Vitamin (B-12):

Vitamin B-12 contains the mineral cobalt and is sometimes called cobalamin. The body uses vitamin B-12 for creating new red blood cells, and brain function and helps metabolize fat and protein. Naturally, B-12 occurs in clams, beef, salmon, milk and yogurt.

Summary:

B vitamins each have their own unique functions, but they depend upon one another for proper absorption and the best health benefits. People can treat and prevent B vitamin deficiencies by increasing their dietary intake of high-vitamin foods or taking vitamin supplements. Ask your medical practitioner about which vitamin B supplement is right for you.
